Final Approval for Unborn Protection in Texas

In the USA what looked impossible has now been done.  The unborn child will be recognised as a person in Texas Law. In a tremendous victory for the grass roots pro-life movement in Texas, the Texas House of Representatives gave final approval to the Prenatal Protection Act, SB 319. The vote on final passage was 112-15.The Prenatal Protection Act extends personhood to the unborn child from conception through birth, makes it a crime to kill an unborn child against the mother¹s wishes, and allows parents to sue for the wrongful death of their unborn child. Without a doubt, the success of this and other pro-life bills would not have been possible without the massive grass roots support. Norma McCorvey.

FPA¹s Clash on Alleged Abortion Figures.

A study conducted by the Family Planning Association of Northern Ireland (FPANI) on women from both sides of the Irish border concluded that more than 12,000 women travel to the UK for abortions, twice the figure given by the Irish Family Planning Association. The Northern Ireland figures would appear to contradict those quoted by the Irish Family Planning Association. ³Our figures show that more than 6,000 Irish women travel to all parts of Britain every year for an abortion², a spokesperson for the IFPA said. According to their figures, between January 1980 and December 2001, at least 98,565 Irish women had abortions in Britain. Pro-lifers in Ireland always said there was a serious question mark over the figures quoted by the FPA¹s, and the real figures were nowhere near the quoted figures. ³But if both organisations say their figures hold true who has got their figures wrong and why?² asked a pro-life spokesman. Irish Examiner. June 3. PU.

Canadian Abortion Pill Trial "Cover-up"

Officials in Canada have confirmed that the government has completed an investigation into the death of a Canadian woman after she took part in an RU-486 abortion pill trial. Dr Ellen Wiebe, a Vancouver abortionist who conducted the experiments with the pill, has been sent the results of the government investigation, but the government will not reveal the results to the public.Tara Madigan, a spokesman for Health Canada, said that while the investigation is complete, the results were ³proprietary², or owned by the investigator, in this case Dr Wiebe. With Dr Wiebe being one of the foremost promoters of RU-486, observers are doubtful she will reveal any details from the government investigation. Babies at Risk from Waste Facilities, says Study

Living near an incinerator increases the risks of a baby being born with spina bifida and congenital heart defects, a new Irish study has found. The risk of lethal birth defects also increases for those living near crematoriums. Those living in areas where waste incinerators are proposed, including Ringaskiddy, Cork, will view with alarm the new research released in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health, published by the British Medical Journal. A research team from the University of Newcastle studied adverse pregnancy outcomes around both incinerators and crematoriums in Cumbria, northwest England, over the years from 1956 through 1993.They looked in particular at any change in the risk of stillbirth, death soon after birth or lethal congenital abnormalities in babies born to mothers living near these facilities. Irish Times. May 29.

Abortion and Risk of Later Premature Births

According to the latest issue of the Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons, at least 49 studies have demonstrated a statistically significant increase in premature births (PB) or low birth weight (LBW) risk in women with prior induced abortions (IAs). According to the authors, large studies have reported a doubling of PB risk from two prior IAs. Women who had four or more IAs experienced nine times, on average, the PB risk an increase of 800 percent. These results suggest that women contemplating abortion should be informed of this potential risk to subsequent pregnancies, and that physicians should be aware of the potential liability and possible need for intensified prenatal care. Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons 2003;8(2): 46-49. By Brent Rooney and Byron C. Calhoul, M.D. Brent Rooney.

Levonelle-2 Manufacturer, Schering, May Face "Death Penalty"

The Schering-Plough Corporation, manufacturer of the Śmorning-after pill¹, Levonelle-2, which the Irish Medicines Board recently licensed for distribution in Ireland, said that it could soon be indicted in a federal investigation into its prescription drug marketing practices, and face charges that employees destroyed documents related to the case. The allegations against Schering-Plough are the latest in a spate of investigations and lawsuits by private parties, state governments and the federal government focused on the pharmaceutical industry¹s marketing practices. In February, the company said it had set aside $150 million to help cover a settlement with federal prosecutors in Boston and Philadelphia. Analysts said they thought the company, which is struggling with declining sales and a host of other legal matters, would now be forced to pay far more to resolve the case. If Schering-Plough is ultimately convicted of a felony involving health care fraud, the government could seek to bar its prescription drugs from the federal Medicare and Medicaid programmes. Health care companies and their lawyers call such a step ³the death penalty², because of the devastating effect it would have on a company¹s business. UKLifeleague.
