Life throws much at us and we carry the scars of the various hurts and rejections we pick up along the way. Sometimes these get buried so deep that we have forgotten them, but the unconscious mind has them stored away as memories just like a computer. Those working in the area of psychiatry, counselling and in healing ministries have much to share on the way these hurt memories can affect us all in temperament, personality and even in physical illness. We know that psychomatic illnesses like asthma and exzema can be exacerbated by stress, as can many other physical complaints. Tensions caused by stress can bring on muscle and back pains which often eleviate when the cause of the stress is removed.

Healing the Years aims to take a gentle look back through the various stages in our lives where holding on to hurts, disappointments, angers and resentments can actually harm us. Forgiveness is the root of most healings but often we have hidden these hurts so deeply into our unconscious mind that we are actually unaware of them in our conscious memories.

This series of discussions on Divine Health looks at the different periods in our lives where hurts and rejections can accumulate and, although long fogotten, can often be the cause of a condition or temperament or the block to a complete healing process. Unforgiveness, or the harbouring of grudges and resentments, has been found to be the most damaging of emotions and definitely prove to be a huge block to healing.

We start the series on Healing the Years by first looking at when life begins - In the Womb. Scientists have discovered how much can affect the early developing foetus and the baby during its 9 months in the womb - rejections by the mother or the father, attempted self-induced abortions, angers, parental fighting, paternal desertion or separations. And those involved in Healing Ministries often find that present-day problems can go right back to the moment of conception. Even previous pregnancies can affect the child in the womb if they were stillbirths, spontaneous or induced abortions or the birth of an older child with an illness or disability.

The series continues through the various stages of our lives from childhood, through our teenage years, young adulthood and from our middle years to the twilight years. We are like sponges soaking up situations, actions and words that cause us hurt and often we hold onto those hurts with an inability to forgive. Divine Health starts with forgiveness, just as Jesus performed His miracles by first forgiving then healing.

Healing ministries need to be well covered in prayer and the words of wisdom and discernment given to those working in this area come directly from God's Holy Spirit. In each of the sections we have included a short prayer to the Holy Spirit asking that He show us in His own gentle way those hurt areas in our lives that could be causing us problems.

We should try to say these short prayers morning, noon and night to enlighten and guide us through the various areas in our lives where we need to forgive, where we have buried the hurts and where we need to be made whole, and the lovely little prayer to the Lord giving Him our whole selves every day.

"O Holy Spirit, beloved of my soul, I adore You. Enlighten me, guide me, strengthen me, console me, tell me what I should do. Give me Your orders. I promise to submit myself to all that You desire of me and to accept all that You permit to happen to me. Let me only know Your will. Amen"

"Dear Lord, I give you may hands to do Your work; I give You my feet to go Your way; I give You my eyes to see as You see; I give You my tongue to speak Your words; I give You my mind that You may think in me; I give You my spirit that You may pray in me. Above all, I give You my heart that You may love in me - love the Father and love all humankind. I give You my whole self, Lord, that You may grow in me, so that it is You who lives, works and prays in me. Amen."

Moytura has several other sites with a 'Christian flavour'. Prayerful Thoughts & Thoughtful Prayers is a little collection of prayers and thought-provoking stories, and a few links to some other really nice websites. Reflections for Lent offers a daily meditation for the 40 days of lent and the week leading into Easter. As part of my Journey section of the website join me to learn a little of the Early Christian Church in Ireland by visiting Clonmacnoise, founded by St. Ciaran on the banks of the River Shannon in the 6th. Century. Read about Saint Brendan the Navigator who started a Monastic settlement in the tiny village of Clonfert in the 6th century, located on the Galway/Offaly/Tipperary border. Travel on my journeys to two of Canada's most famous Catholic Shrines - Saint Anne de Beaupré and Cap de la Madeleine, both on the shores of the Saint Lawrence river in Quebec. Finally I welcome you to come with me to see a little of Medugorje, a peaceful haven in a war-torn country - Bosnia-Herzogovina.
