Michelle's Story

When I was 24 I was pregnant with my 3rd child. I was living in texas at the time. I had gone to the local clinic or what I later began calling the place of hell. But at 23 weeks they asked me to take a AFP test. A week later they called me to tell me that the baby was Downs and that I should come in as soon as possible before it was too late to get an abortion.  I was shocked that this was even said to me and was hurt by it. I asked the woman why I should have an abortion and she said that having a baby with Downs Syndrome would be too hard on me and my family and that this was the best option. I sat there and thought about it for a long time and we eventually moved back to Colorado.  I was still pregnant and highly concerned that I had a baby with Downs and was having this baby the smartest thing. To make a long story short I kept the baby to term. When she was born she was completely normal and may I add that my older 2 girls are special needs and the youngest the one that I was told to abort is the only child I have that is on track in development.

I don't judge anyone that chooses to have an abortion because I dont know that it is my place.  However, before you decide to do so I ask that you think about it.  If ever a Dr. tells you to have an abortion make sure that what is being said to you is true.  What I didnt know until later was that this clinic was known for telling women that they had Downs babys and the reason? because they did the tests too late and they always come up positive for Downs.  I want to say to you all that although it may seem right when it all comes to an end it ruins you. What I have to admit was that at 17 I too had an abortion.  I don't tell many people because I was embarrased. I still think that maybe just maybe I COULD have made it with that baby. Even though I thought it would ruin my life I often think was I wrong ? When I had my first at 21 it really wasn't that different. Sure, I wouldnt have been partying or whatever but I would have been able to have my baby in my arms instead of not having it at all.

Moytura has several other sites with a 'Christian flavour'. Prayerful Thoughts & Thoughtful Prayers is a little collection of prayers and thought-provoking stories, and a few links to some other really nice websites. Reflections for Lent offers a daily meditation for the 40 days of lent and the week leading into Easter. As part of my Journey section of the website join me to learn a little of the Early Christian Church in Ireland by visiting Clonmacnoise, founded by St. Ciaran on the banks of the River Shannon in the 6th. Century. Read about Saint Brendan the Navigator who started a Monastic settlement in the tiny village of Clonfert in the 6th century, located on the Galway/Offaly/Tipperary border. Travel on my journeys to two of Canada's most famous Catholic Shrines - Saint Anne de Beaupré and Cap de la Madeleine, both on the shores of the Saint Lawrence river in Quebec. Finally I welcome you to come with me to see a little of Medugorje, a peaceful haven in a war-torn country - Bosnia-Herzogovina.
